Following the success of A-L-X’s slow-burning debut release ‘Beautiful Criminal’ we catch up with the singer to talk about his latest release ‘Allure’
Having garnered so much support with his debut release ‘Beautiful Criminal’, young star A-L-X has returned with his second release – ‘Allure’. Another consummate, glossy track that emanates sexy undertones as well as summer freshness,’Allure’ might well end up being the soundtrack to your summer. Whilst his signature sultry guitar solo and inventive chord progression again define him as one of the most exciting rising young stars of the moment, we catch up with the man himself to find out what drives his music, which has already been granted playlist spots on BBC Introducing on Radio 1 & 1Xtra. Here we talk dark undercurrents and dream collaborations with Kanye…
When did you first realise you could sing?
I’ve been singing and playing music for as long as I can remember, but I guess I started getting into it for real around the age of 13.
What about when you were growing up, what did you listen to?
I grew up listening to all different types of music. Anything guitar based. I have always been a huge Nirvana fan and bands like that.
Let’s talk about your new song Allure. What was the inspiration behind it?
I wanted Allure to have a raw feel to it, like my first record Beautiful Criminal. The concept for the song is about your world being rocked by someone, and that feeling of being blown away.
Can you explain the story told in the video?
The story told in the video is the relationship between a trampolinist and a man who works in the gym she trains in. He has developed almost an obsession for this girl that he sees every day as she goes about her daily training routine. He is in awe of her and she finally begins to acknowledge him, or perhaps it’s his imagination.
Your sound often seems to have a darker undertone with uplifting layers on top, is this a conscious decision?
It was a conscious decision to keep it darker and a bit mysterious. But I love playing with dynamics in music and having euphoric moments.
Music is all about euphoric moments. If you had to pick one song to soundtrack your life what would it be?
Jimmy Hendrix – All Along the Watchtower.
Good choice! What would be your dream collaboration?
There’s lots of artists I want to work with, but the dream collaboration for me would probably be Kanye.
What does the rest of 2014 have in the pipeline?
More records to come this year also developing my live show! Hopefully there are a few collaborations coming up too.
We can only hope!
