PLAYLIST: BEN PEARCE – ‘DISCO’

DJ, producer and owner of Purp and Soul Records, Ben Pearce has put together a collection of disco classics and some lesser-known gems for you to groove to.

Ben Pearce

In the Wonderland office we like to listen to some disco to get ready for the weekend and the weekend planning commences at 9am Monday morning. So here we have Ben Pearce’s top disco picks to curb that mid-week slump, all that’s left to think about is which one of your friends will be willing to re-enact the iconic scene from Saturday Night Fever with you on the dance floor before selecting your sequins and sparkles of choice.

Evelyn Champagne King – ‘Love Come Down’

All about the bass in this track, complete classic. There’s some fantastic edits knocking around but the original is still the best.

The BB & Q Band – ‘Imagination’

This was a fairly recent record purchase, the bass lick on the chorus just oozes funk. Love the arrangement too.

Crazy P – ‘Heartbreaker’

A modern classic from one of my favourite live acts. Danielle epitomises stage presence in a very classy way.

Gwen Guthrie – ‘Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ On But the Rent (Club Mix)’

Another quite recent discogs purchase, was captured by the lyrics and the lazy style of this. Percussion is outstanding.

Anita Ward – ‘Ring My Bell’

That synth intro is so recognisable now, such a simple hook and it just works. So upbeat & catchy.

MFSB – ‘Mysteries Of The World’

Instrumental here, the synth drifting out of this is phenomenal. Love the strings too, a great track to build into.

Storm – ‘Can’t Nobody Love Me Like You Do’

Another track built around a simple hook. A bit less bright in terms of production but the vocal leads and it deserves it.

GL – ‘Won’t You See’

Another recent choice but feels so vintage. Drums maybe a bit heavier but it’s a real throwback. Melbourne doing the business here.

First Choice – ‘Armed and Extremely Dangerous’

First Choice are a common choice in some form or another, it’s all about the percussion for me. Such an arms up track.

Venus Dodson – ‘Shining’

Guessing you’re seeing the trend with percussion. This just sounds like it would be amazing live, tonnes of energy and solo parts.

Ben Pearce has just launched a brand new disco inspired mix series titled The Sextape Series. Episode 1 is free to download here.
