Oliver Spencer talks AW15

We dissect Oliver Spencer’s AW15 show with the man himself, inspired by sculptor and artist, David Nash.

Oliver Spencer AW15

Inspired by ‘the rough with the smooth’ textures played a key role throughout Oliver Spencer’s AW15 line at LC:M, with alpaca, cashmere and lambswool redefining the standards of luxury you should expect from everyday wear. Toned down and laid back, the natural colour palette imitates charred wood using charcoal and cream, but this isn’t a plain collection with florals subtly creeping in and statement pieces present, that grab your attention whilst still maintaining wearability. We discuss the collection references, and audio muses with the man himself Oliver Spencer.

What was your first encounter with the work of David Nash?

I actually only quite recently discovered his work, in the last year or so. I came across a book of his sculptures, and things moved on from there. I really love what he does with charcoal and wood.

What is it that draws you to his work?

He’s great with natural elements – I really love what he does with charcoal and wood, especially.

The Turbans were amazing, how did you come across them?

I knew that I wanted a gypsy band. The whole show was all about the rough with the smooth. The Turbans incorporated the rough, and the collection encompassed the smooth with its clean lines and rich textures.

What made you decide to have live music on the catwalk?

It’s important to me to incorporate performance into the show. We only have a short amount of time to create an impact, and we want people to remember us, and to make a lasting impression in peoples’ minds.

There was such a great contrast of textures, why is this such a reoccurring theme in your work?

I’m a textile-head. I love texture, and the richness involved in fabrication. I think the feeling of clothes when you’re wearing them is really important.

Who would be the Oliver Spencer pin up guy for this AW15 collection?

I’m not sure that there’s one guy for the season. I think it’s quite a combination. The collection has matured somewhat, and it’s much more considered, which means that it’s not necessarily for one type of person.
