PREMIERE: SPEAKMAN SOUND – “IN FLIGHT”

Experimental production duo, Speakman Sound, unveil the video to new single “In Flight”.

Glastonbury-based brothers, Todd and Guy, are changing the face of dance music. Having been immersed in music by their father, a popular guitarist in the psychedelic music scene, the two found their love for dance music as they grew up in the rave scene in Somerset.

Their new single “In Flight” is the perfect debut, and shows Todd and Guy’s willingness to push boundaries with their music. It’s an infectiously catchy track, showcasing their ability to conquer experimental house sounds and create an almighty record. Their close friend Sharky is a stunning addition to the sound, which is emphasised by the Hackney New School Year 8 Choir, where Todd regularly teaches drums.

Set to debut their exciting electronic show later this year, we had a chat with the boys to find out more about them.

When did you decide to start making music together?

We were always messing around as kids in our Dad’s music room, but we properly decided to make music together when guy moved to London in 2012.

You grew up around all these different music genres. Do you feel like that has had an influence on your sound?

100%. We are a product of our environment and our environment was full of musical stimulation. Being out late at festivals and parties with our family allowed us to observe the audience from a young age.

Can you tell us a little bit about your creative process?

One of us will bring an idea into the studio be it harmonic, rhythmic or melodic. From there we allow each other to manipulate and play with it. Once an idea is at a certain stage we always like to bring in friends to add multiple layers of performance. It’s the mix of live performance and electronic production which we get off on.

Your AA debut single “In Flight/Pangea” is a very experimental piece. What was the inspiration behind it?

“In Flight” was an early production from us, we were playing with using world sounds inspired from artists such as Quantic, and also wanted to write on an uplifting theme with a psychedelic view for kids.

We’ve heard you throw pretty epic late night parties at your studio in Cricklewood. How does it feel like to be surrounded by so many talented artists everyday?

It’s essential. Music is a social activity and nothing we do is possible without everyone we know and all the people we will continue to meet and grow with.

Is there a particular artist you’d love to work with?

There’s loads but if we picked one right now it would have to be Kendrick Lamar!

What does 2017 look like for Speakman Sound?

We are really excited to finally be sharing the music we have been making, also to play live for the first time. We will also be launching our own club night at Elektroworks in Angel in London on May 10th which will be a party full of our extended multi disciplinary collective.
