New Noise: Tom Walker

Your new favourite Scottish songwriter.

Already being hailed as “the next big thing”, 2017 is shaping up to be a great year for Tom Walker. The Scottish born songwriter has been described as the next Ed Sheeran, gathered tons of fans and racked up an incredible 25 million streams on Spotify. With smoky vocals that will give you goose bumps and songwriting skills that can break your heart, this praise isn’t coming out of nowhere.

Now releasing his newest EP “Blessings”, the future is looking bright for the Scottish heartthrob. Consisting of five songs, Tom shows his ability to make equally beautifully intimate and fantastically upbeat tracks. We sat down with him on the eve of his EP release to find out more.

Hey Tom, how’s it going?

All good cheers! Just in the Tour Van on the way to Wales.

When did you first fall in love with music?

I apparently was singing along to Sting before I could even talk, I used to sit in the back of the car wailing at my mum, saying “saminthebars!” Turns out after a while she worked out I was asking for “Nothin ’bout me”.

Who would you say are your fave bands/artists of all time?

ACDC/Arctic monkeys/Paolo Nutini.

And who are your guilty pleasures?

Robbie williams, love a bit of Robbie! Ed Sheeran, not really guilty but the guy can write a tune.

“I apparently was singing along to Sting before I could even talk.”

You’re about to release your debut EP! How are you feeling?

I’m really excited, been working on it for a while and it’s been an unbelievable experience, I was lucky enough to work with Jim Abbiss, the lad’s a genius. It’s got a proper sound to it and I’m really proud of it. Can’t wait to see what everyone thinks.

What were the main inspirations for the record?

A collection of experiences and life lessons from the past year and a half. From amazing nights at home, to that guy on the train that’s pissing everyone of because he’s 17 beers down and isn’t making sense anymore.

You’ve got a stunning voice. It has that Tom Grennan-esque rawness, and it’s just beautiful. Where did you learn to sing like that?

Nice one! I just started singing one day, at the start I was properly crap, but just like anything, if you put on the time you eventually get there in the end.

If you weren’t singing, what do you think you’d be doing?

Probably looking for a job and a place to live.

What else have you got planned for this year?

I’m hitting up the states in a few weeks for a little radio tour. Got a few festivals on the go, I’m doing a little set at Glasto this year which is a dream come true. Doing a few gigs round Europe. And trying to finish my album. Hopefully having some top crack along the way.
