Looking through the windows of the Jermyn Street store in which her models were placed, it was clear that there was one thing on Lou Dalton’s agenda when she designed her SS18 collection: stripes (and bold ones too). Vibrant bands of colour appeared on almost all of the ensembles present, peeking out from behind one of the oversized shirts or taking the form of bright, pulled-up socks, rising up from a pair of white Converse.
Keep Your Shirt On
Loose, expertly constructed shirts hung off the models in shades of chocolate brown, baby blue, cream, and beige. Where Dalton’s previous line-ups are known to have been inspired by the men close to her, notably her father and her partner, in this case the result of such influence is a refined, wearable shirt that simultaneously captures a degree of Dalton’s understated aesthetic. Worn buttoned close or relaxed and open, they have been designed with the individual’s personal taste in mind.
Stick to Your Knitting
At the centre of Dalton’s collection here is a deep appreciation for knitwear. Made from fine gauge merino wool and Sea Island cotton, the designer’s sweaters speak for the brand’s dedication to creating beautifully made garments that are more than just wardrobe staples. Exposed seams and tiered contra cuffs embellish some pieces, keeping in line with Dalton’s intrinsic creative voice that seems to be woven into the fabric; elsewhere a Lou Dalton logo – designed by John Booth – features.
