Britney Spears is many things to many people. She’s a pop vanguard, a gay icon, a 90’s trendsetter. But, as The New York Times’ documentary “Framing Britney Spears” serves to remind us, she is also a woman imprisoned by her own success and failed by nearly every person around her. Be it the paparazzi who hounded her, the father who trapped her, the lovers who used her, or even the fans who obsessed over her – the documentary takes a hard look at everyone who took a piece of the star, leaving her with nothing for herself.

As soon as the documentary dropped in the US last Friday, the internet set alight. #FreeBritney went viral once again and social media was flooded with messages of solidarity.

From Sarah Jessica Parker to Hayley Williams, celebrities have come out in force.

Miley Cyrus even gave a shout out to the pop icon during her Super Bowl tailgate performance.

One celebrity in particular, however, has come under fire for his role in using her.

Many are furious at how the female star was treated by the media.

And at the father who has control over her.

And every single person was incredibly moved.
