DIOR HAUTE COUTURE AW21/22

Maria Grazia Chiuri pays tribute to the avant-garde roots of Haute Couture with the French house’s latest collection filled with tweed coats and embroidery galore.

While the delightful scenes from fashion week have been gracing our screens for weeks on end now, the glamorous world of fashion is refusing to rest. Why? Because it’s now Couture Fashion Week. And, putting on a display of intricate detailing, sumptuous designs and all-around grandeur is Dior, as they unveil their Haute Couture AW21/22 collection in Paris.

Returning to a physical format with the sandy Chambre de Soie by Eva Jospin offering a celebratory backdrop for the collection as it looked to the savoir-faire and diverse cultures of the world, the idea of being present was playfully worked into the show. Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri looked to delight the senses as rough tweed coats and riding caps met delicate form-clinging chiffon-like material and gaping fishnet tops, providing a clashing of textures. As an ode to the foundations of couture, the show put on a display of the intricate embroidery synonymous with past collections, but now with the added focus on the capacity of minute details to captivate and enchant the in-person observer.

With regal ruffled high neck collars being proceeded by ethereal gowns which would be worn by the likes of Grecian goddesses, thickly layered trench coats and pleated below-the-knee skirts, it is clear that inspiration spanned across multiple locations and eras. But, with the collection remaining rooted in a celebration of all things couture, it is fair to say it was a truly avant-garde sensory experience.
