“The ‘Scrambled Eggs’ video marks my arrival at the beginning,” the Port Elizabeth-born and raised musician and artist Moonchild Sanelly tells Wonderland. “It’s the beginning of being in THAT space; this new world that this crazy, amazing, powerful, beautiful gang of absolute muthafuckers built together,” she continues. “This world contains everything I’ve ever worked for. These are my people, and this is our superhero moment.”
“Scrambled Eggs” inaugurates an important chapter for the South African powerhouse, as it’s the first offering of her forthcoming new album, to be announced later this year. The music video, directed by Jabu Nadia Newman, was shot last month in Johannesburg, and it’s an action-packed, chaotic, and carefree project — and a celebration of female-led business empires.
“The video’s concept and direction were totally inspired by Moonchild’s persona!” says Newman. “Her vibe, her hilarious and insightful lyrics, filled with wit and empowerment. We were aiming to be bold and showcase a fresh angle of Moonchild. Plus, the outfits were all custom-made by talented local designers and put together by our stylist. We took cues from local aesthetics, embracing textures, prints, and colors to craft some seriously eye-catching looks for our egg thieves! What warmed my heart was how Moon and her crew embraced the concept fully, trusting our vision. We all dove into our roles and just had a blast throughout the shoot.”
The track is intoxicatingly upbeat and marks a joyous return for the multilayered artist and her self-described future-ghetto-funk style, having collaborated with everyone from Beyoncé to UK grime legend Ghetts, and from Gorillaz to Major Lazer and Wesley Joseph to Wizkid.
