My Midnight Heart has firmly established her presence in the Alternative R&B scene, known for her distinct, dreamy, yet irresistibly danceable sound. She has carefully curated a uniquely positioned discography while landing coveted opening slots for industry powerhouses like Solange, Blood Orange, and Foxes. With her latest track, “anew”, My Midnight Heart delves into an often-neglected narrative in contemporary music—how pregnancy and early motherhood demand a profound form of ego death.
Diving into the process of writing the track, the singer confides, “Four years after my daughter’s birth I had only just begun to feel like myself again. My brain, my body, my blood finally felt like they belonged to me. I decided it would be my year. My moment. But when I realized I was pregnant with my son, I knew I would have to start the journey all over again.” Angélica expands on the feeling, continuing, “I struggled so much reclaiming my identity with my firstborn, I wrote this song wanting to allow myself to enter a speculative space where I gave of myself easily… Opening to the possibility of being alchemized in the process.”
This self-produced release showcases My Midnight Heart’s extraordinary, multi-faceted talent. The track opens with lush, expansive production, featuring crystalline vocal synths and hypnotic, oscillating beats that create an ethereal yet electrifying soundscape. The vibrant percussion and futuristic production, combined with her dynamic vocal range and evocative lyricism, culminate in a richly textured and exploratory piece of music that breaks new ground.
The accompanying lo-fi visuals for “anew” offer a refreshingly raw and authentic portrayal of motherhood, challenging conventional depictions of pregnancy. These understated yet powerful visuals perfectly mirror the track’s deeply introspective themes.
