Wonderland caught up with the rising British girl band to discuss their new single, “Trouble”, how they complement each other’s artistry, and their biggest Summer to date.
Picture this: waking up every day with your best friends, spending your days making music, and getting to call that your job. Sounds like a dream, right? Welcome to Say Now’s world. One of the hottest up-and-coming girl bands in Britain, the pop group, fronted by Ysabelle Angeli, Maddie Haynes, and Amelia Onuorah, has been taking the industry by storm with their nostalgia-infused sonic essence and youthful energy.
Their new single, “Trouble,” out now, arrives on the heels of their biggest summer to date, following a co-sign from SZA, a spot on the same bill as Kylie Minogue at BST Hyde Park, and a performance at the UK’s biggest pop festival, Mighty Hoopla. In conversation with Wonderland, they discuss Say Now’s creative upbringing, their current inspirations, and what’s next. Keep reading…
And listen to “Trouble” now!
Hi girls! Thanks so much for chatting with us. What have you been up to lately? How’s summer treating you?
Hey Wonderland! This summer has been insane – we just released our latest single “Trouble” and the music video to go with it with, featuring the amazing Nadine Coyle. This summer has been so much fun, definitely our best summer yet. A new era of Say Now has begun.
Talk me through your early days. How did things start for you? Did you always dream of being in a girls’ band?
Yssy and Amelia were introduced through management after being scouted online and then after a year of searching for a third member Amelia actually found Maddie on Instagram and reached out to her via DM, the next day we all met and the rest is history. None of us had ever thought of being in a girl band, however, we always loved them so when the opportunity came around we jumped at it!
Who inspired you musically during your creative upbringing? Did you always know you wanted to pursue a career in music?
We’ve all always wanted to sing and grew up with parents who influenced our musical taste. They introduced us to amazing artist and we grew up listening to music such as Mary J. Blige, Bruno Mars, Beyoncé, Spice Girls and actually both Maddie and Yssy went to performing art schools.
What’s a day in your life like these days? Do you live together? And what do you enjoy most about having each other around as business partners and friends?
We spend almost everyday together and live together so a day in the life for us is usually: wake up, music, eat, sleep, repeat and we wouldn’t have it any other way – we always describe ourselves as sisters but without the arguing part because we love each other so much.
How do you reflect on the impact of womanhood in your life and upbringing?
We all grew up with lots of women in our lives and all have sisters so girl power is engrained in us. We also grew up with strong female artists and that’s where the majority of our inspiration comes from today – we look up to girl bands past and present.
Which artists inspire your music today? And what’s the song of the summer for you?
We’ve always loved both pop and R&B artists and in fact we grew up listening to all different types of genres so I think our music is definitely a mix of all of that but mainly pop. Our song of the summer has to be ‘Pink Pony Club’ as Chappell Roan is such an icon.
Massive congrats on the release of “Trouble”! Tell us a bit about your creative process behind the track and what excites you most about it.
When writing “Trouble”, we went into the session wanting a fun, anthemic song that gives hot girl summer and cheeky energy. Our original reference for the song was Wannabe by Spice Girls so when we found out that Wannabe was inspired by EMF’s Unbelievable we knew we had to sample it… what better way to encapsulate that energy! It’s really exciting to us because we love a pop banger song with an R&B bridge.
How do you think you complement each other’s artistry? And what do you love most about working collaboratively?
We all have very similar music tastes and we know each other so well so it’s super easy to work together. We all have different styles of singing voices so when we all come together and sing, it creates that unique Say Now sound.
You had a massive summer this year, playing Mighty Hoopla and sharing a bill with Kylie Minogue at BST Hyde Park. How do you reflect on your artistic growth since you started? And what has been your biggest “pinch me” moment so far?
Performing our first festival was super surreal and then getting to support Kylie felt like a dream come true for us as we’ve always been Kylie fans (and love her Prosecco lol). Looking back, it’s super pinch me to see how far we’ve come as we’ve only been releasing music for a year and so performing to people that know the words and love our songs seems crazy, we love everyone so much who supports us and has helped us get to this point.
Looking forward, what’s next for you? And what excites you most about the future?
We have so much unreleased music that we love and we can’t wait to share it with everyone. We’re really looking forward to doing more performances towards the end of the year and just meeting more people that listen to Say Now.
