Listen to the new single…

What sparked “Distant Lover,” and how does it vibe with your new album?

It’s crazy because “Distant Lover” is really the warmup for this album. Lowkey is one of the least danceable songs, so it’s good to see the reactions to it.

What’s the core message you want listeners to feel from Distant Lover?

Longing for someone who isn’t in your city. That FaceTime love.

How does this track showcase your evolution since Hummingbird?

I think Hummingbird was more evident of what we were going through with COVID. Now we are all outside, so it’s time to have fun.

Give us the lowdown on your upcoming album—how does it build on “Distant Lover”?

The album is a reflection of myself and what the past couple of years have been like for me. Also, it is a reflection of what I experienced as a DJ on the road. The album, without giving away too much, is a literal play on my stage name.

Any exciting collabs lined up for the new album? How do they fit your vision?

See, you’re trying to give away the surprises, but overall, the collabs are more friends than anything. I really just wanted to have fun with this album and not feel like I’m trying to game the system. All taste choices, if that’s any hint.

How was the recording process different this time around?

I recorded it faster, but I also kept it very tight-knit this time around. Everyone I collaborated with on this album is someone who helped push me as a producer and artist. We also just had fun…I am going to keep emphasizing that.

How have your life experiences colored the music and lyrics in this new project?

It’s a reflection of life and a snapshot of nightlife.

How has collaborating with artists like Childish Gambino influenced your style?

I think it allowed me to be more comfortable with myself as an artist and not chase anything. Artists like Childish do things at their own pace, and I respect that. Back when I was doing mostly production and songwriting, he actually encouraged me to take singing seriously. Also, we’re both Libras, so there’s that.

Who would be your top three musical influences?

Stevie Wonder, Michael Franks, and Sly Stone.

As you gear up for festivals like Governors Ball and Lollapalooza, what’s your live performance dream?

To see people in the crowd singing my songs. That’s it. I’m a simple man.
