Wonderland takes a look inside the growing underground community of BMX biking through the lens of Dan Lacey and Monster Energy’s event last Friday.

Last Friday, in a carpark in Wapping overlooking Canary Wharf and the London City skyline, a plethora of BMX riders — of all backgrounds and ages — came together to celebrate the community and culture surrounding the sport. The event was put together by Monster Energy and Dan Lacey, X-Games and British BMX icon. Lacey hosted a competition, dubbed the BMX event of the year and the latest in the brand and rider’s joint enterprise ‘Cash Up’, with hopefuls bringing their best tricks and most extravagant jumps in the fiery late afternoon heat.
“What BMX brings to the culture is the community aspect,” Lacey tells Wonderland. “You look around here today, and we have locals and also people from all over the world. Everyone has a unique story, but we’re all here to do the same thing; and that’s have a great time.”

The event just had to take place in the English capital. “There’s no other city like London,” he adds. “It has the wildest original architecture that feels like it was built for us to ride. And the vibe here is like no other. Even as a long-time BMX rider, there’s still so much to explore.”
With many incentives to come and BMX riding on the rise, Lacey and Monster Energy hope to continue to augment their own relationship and the reputation of the sport, bringing its unique culture and community to more places — and more faces. “We want to continue making Cash-Up bigger and better,” Lacey concludes. “Bring it to new cities, create exciting new features and continue to build something special. Creating moments like this is more than I could’ve ever asked for.”
