CHECKING IN: CAPELLA BANGKOK

On the banks of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River, the world’s best hotel – Capella Bangkok – redefines what five stars really means.

No one mentioned heaven had room service, but here we are, staring at an extensive menu, wrapped in a towelling robe in a bed as big as a small country. Outside, the city’s living, breathing rhythm unfolds widescreen through panoramic windows, as Capella Bangkok turns paradise into something you can check into: 101 contemporary rooms, suites and villas stretched along the Chao Phraya, Bangkok’s famed ‘River of Kings’. It’s an oasis from the noise, yet somehow still tuned into the city’s pulse. Capella does the impossible: offering sanctuary from Bangkok and direct access to its beauty, all at once.

When you do leave your bed (no easy feat, but drawing up the black-out blinds with a bedside button makes it slightly easier), your personal Culturist – a 24/7 concierge you can message or meet IRL – steps in as your bespoke Bangkok guidebook. They’ve scoured the city leaf by leaf, embedding themselves in local neighbourhoods and unearthing stories, skills, and quiet moments you won’t find on TripAdvisor. From meditating with monks at a neighbourhood temple to tracking down hidden restaurants or getting a fresh trim at a local barber, they’ve got you covered. The result? Capella Curates: a tight edit of experiences crafted with – and by – the local community. Echoed within the hotel’s lush surroundings, you can make Thai herb inhalers (luxury, homemade versions of the iconic 7-Eleven kind), practice Muay Thai with local experts, or enjoy sunrise yoga al fresco. They’ve really thought of everything.

Every inch of the hotel feels considered. Check-in happens behind an access-only door, tucked away in a space known as The Living Room, where guests are greeted with complimentary bubbly and free-flow soft drinks from 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. It’s also home to the hotel’s Cin-Cin Hour – Capella’s legendary 5 p.m. cocktail ritual. For a curated menu of original cocktails you won’t soon forget (even after you’ve had a few  – and that’s the sign), head to Capella Bangkok’s elegant cocktail salon: Stella: The Journey of Old Siam. Hollywood glamour beams from its mirrored ceiling, intimate table set-ups, and sultry bar haloed by glowing orbs. The cocktails take you on a spiritual tour through Bangkok’s rich history – from The Silver Screen, a tribute to Thai cinema served atop a faux film reel, to The Long Lai, symbolising the power of the dragon, presented on a glowing pedestal. Expect a mix of smooth jazz and upbeat pop played by local musicians. The star of the show, though? A feathered peacock, its tail cascading into the centre of the room. An instant Instagram post for honeymooners and cool couples alike. Stella is sexy, cinematic and transportive – everything a cocktail bar dreamed of being when it grew up.

When the sun’s out and a cool-down is required, head poolside. Canopy beds or sun loungers are swiftly arranged by staff who fit towels, offer slices of fresh melon on crushed ice, and ice-cold water without asking. It’s a cliché to call Thailand the ‘Land of Smiles’, but Capella’s staff make the phrase feel newly relevant.

Down the steps from the pool sits the first of the hotel’s two restaurants: Phra Nakhon, a traditional Thai concept helmed by Chef Kannika Jitsangworn, with family recipes at the heart of its extensive menu. Choose from a set menu or order à la carte – the John snapper curry is unforgettable. Pair with local wines, classic cocktails or their non-alcoholic counterparts. This is also where breakfast happens: a buffet meets à la carte hybrid with options spanning creamy salmon omelettes, truffle onsen eggs, fluffy brioche, Pad Kra Pao Moo Sub, green tea soba noodles and omurice. Tables are always full. The staff are used to guests ordering three meals at once. When we did (to share!), our waiter turned to my partner and asked, “And what will you be having?”

Upstairs, Côte by Mauro Colagreco brings the formality. Two Michelin stars in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2025. But it’s the riverside dining that earns real status – a place where locals book tables even when they’re not checking in.

Capella is designed to feel like it’s yours. Corridors are long and cinematic – we hardly passed another guest or shared a lift during our entire stay. Each room is quietly poetic (literally – a Thai poem read aloud by the King during his annual river procession is printed and framed inside). The cushy bed might ruin all future hotel stays. One guest was overheard asking reception where to buy the exact model. There’s his-and-hers sinks with river views, a terraced balcony where sunrise tea feels religious, a deep bath with sea salts, and a walk-in shower if you need to rinse the relaxation off. But you’ll likely lean in.

Auriga Wellness is Capella’s answer to a spa, but even that sounds too basic. Framed by a leafy courtyard, the space includes a serene indoor pool with an overhead waterfall shower and bubbling hydro jets. Women’s facilities include a steam room, while men get a sauna. But the main event is the experience showers, with four settings to choose from. Caribbean Storm mimics a tropical storm with warm and cold jets, moody lighting and ambient sound. It’s like a choreographed performance. Facial treatments use Biologique Recherche products, and body therapies can be fully personalised depending on what your brain or body needs. You’ll likely forget you’re in a hotel at all, until the evening hits.

A black-tie wedding spilled out from the ballroom on night one. Apparently, they do a lot of those here – with views like this and tugboats gliding past like background extras, it tracks. Later, Thai socialites and impossibly glamorous drag queens in Marilyn gowns and sky-high updos emerged for an event. It felt like Studio 54’s guest list had cleaned up, swapped disco for deep tissue massages, and checked into a riverside sanctuary. Trendy couples, in-the-know tourists, Thai aristocrats, and local scene-stealers all folded into one big, photogenic family.

Last year, Capella Bangkok was crowned No.1 in The World’s 50 Best Hotels. A well-deserved accolade that will no doubt outlast its fifth anniversary this October. After all, heaven now has a postcode – and a turn-down service.
