Darcy Whent: Soft Bodies, Hard Frames

If a Simone Rocha collection developed a subconscious, it might look something like a Darcy Whent painting. There are thigh-skimming kilts and enough beautiful locks to make you briefly overlook the more unsettling things happening beneath it. Rocha makes a pearl into a handbag; Whent gives the same luminous sheen to displaced eggs. In the Welsh artist’s paintings, ravens can be friends or foes. Long, glossy waves of hair cascade into ginger dogs and spill from the lap of a woman in a peach plisse shirt. Girls run hand in hand through a cloud of doves. Everyone appears to have dressed for an occasion, though it is difficult to say whether you would want an invitation. Whent draws on personal memory, women’s history, folklore and fairy tales, finding the places where pleasure begins to look like pain, or seduction like a threat. The prettiness holds your attention long enough for something less comfortable to register. You recognise the ingredients, but the story refuses to behave as you remember it. Her first US solo exhibition, at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery in West Palm Beach (open until October 24th), considers how inherited stories shape our sense of ourselves and what we believe. In Whent’s hands, those stories become slippery. A bird needn’t be a bad omen, a girl needn’t be innocent, and beautiful hair offers no guarantee that all is well.
Saltwater Sushi

Aside from spotting Louis Theroux cycling past the office, the best thing that’s ever happened to my working day is Saltwater Sushi. Imagine heaven reincarnated as a fish, sliced and laid onto sticky duvets of sushi rice, and you’ve got the gateway drug to a sushi obsession. Based on Berwick Street, Saltwater serves an assortment of hand rolls and nigiri topped with everything from hamachi and jalapeño to seared salmon dolloped with a miso glaze. The concept is simple: takeaway sushi with the quality of a sit-in joint. The taste, however, is anything but. I’ve just been. But writing this, I may have to go back for round two.

Lacoste x Mackintosh

It’s that time of year again where I realise that out of around 30 coats I own, not one is waterproof. I spend weeks trying to find something only to then give up all together and vow next year will be my year. Lacoste and Mackintosh joined forces with an incredible capsule collection for AW26, which was shown in Paris earlier this year. Made up of twelve pieces, from a polo poncho to a drop waist trench, they are not only beautiful, but deeply practical for the Great British autumn and beyond. Weatherproof has never looked so good.
Miamo Skincare Suite

Over London Fashion Week, I was invited to the Miamo skincare suite at the soon to open, The Shepherd Mayfair Hotel. You may know the brand from their Aging Defence Lip Gloss SPF 30 which had a viral moment this summer but Miamo, founded in Italy in 2012 by Dr Elena Aceto di Capriglia and her daughter Dr Camilla D’Antonio is new onto my radar and they have managed to lock me in with the Crystal Oil Peptide Cleanser. It’s quite hard to get me to stray from my usual skincare routine but the way my skin feels like silk after using, consider me strayed.
The Attico, L’altra di Milano

In Milan last Friday night during Fashion Week, The Attico launched L’altra di Milano, their new daily bag. Models stomped the runway, bags hanging wide open, for all to see the contents inside. The bags functionality is key, the 3 compartments are made for ultimate organisation. You will never catch me rummaging, elbow deep in my bag for anything ever again.

from rooms, cancelled plans Collection

Cosy season is upon us, and thanks to from rooms, it’s about to get even cosier. Sopha and Cinzia strike again, making something the girls simply can’t resist, and though this collection would make the perfect birthday or Christmas present, these will absolutely be reserved for myself – a self-professed Queen of staying in. Now, rather than going to bed with my usual pyjama rotation, I can amp it up with the plush, striped blue and white robe dressing gown from their cancelled plans collection, as well as the laundry room candle – it goes without saying that, to stay in these goodies a bit longer, some things…plans, may have to be rescheduled. Apologies, friends.
Mejuri Interconnected Collection

How does the saying go – diamonds are a girl’s best friend? Well, they’re certainly one of mine. With Mejuri’s newest Interconnected collection, my stack – on all fronts – will be glistening even more than it does post-jewellery clean. The lattice hoops and pendant are a gorgeous touch to a daily casual fit or when you want to be a bit more glam. With a netted design, to represent the interconnectedness of love, friendship, any relationship really, yourself, especially, all that glitters really can be gold with this collection. The golden touch? Most of it is hand-drawn in house, making it that extra bit personal.
Hunter Boots, Tall Gloss Wellington

Though it’s been quite warm and dry, when the rain does pour in the city, it pours. And to best prepare myself, I simply had to go for a pair of Hunter Boots – yes, I still feel FOMO from seeing all the girls sport them at the last Glastonbury. Now, I get to rectify that wrong. The Tall Gloss Wellington boots in Military Red were calling out to me – red appears to be my accent colour of the moment – so naturally, that’s the one that came home with me. And they fit right in my wardrobe. With these, Peppa Pig certainly gets a run for her puddle splashing.
