Renowned producer Das Mörtal puts his own spin on “Uncanny Valley”, the recent provocative single from polymathic presence I’MMORTAL.
From Berlin to Montréal, much revered producer Das Mörtal has a habit of innovating at the very highest level. This new collaboration with New York and London-based producer, creative director and artist I’MMORTAL is an emblem of such. The latter recently augmented her slick, immersive sonic catalogue with the release of “Uncanny Valley”, which has now been reimagined by the beatmaker.
The deep, glistening synths and busy percussion of Das Mörtal provides an engrossing, encompassing backdrop for I’MMORTAL to peruse around vocally. It’s dark and enigmatic in tone, a mood that is only enhanced by the visceral music video accompaniment. “My co-director Danis Zhang and I wanted to create a visceral body-horror experience to reflect the male gaze and its effect on the censorship of the female body,” the artist explains on the video.
I’MMORTAL continues: “This video depicts the stark contrast between the internal power and confidence one experiences when pole dancing or doing burlesque and the external perception when viewed through the male gaze. We wanted to show how the male gaze, especially in a world run by algorithms, is ultimately an echo chamber. It reduces an individual’s (regardless of gender) immaterial exploration into their femininity and sensuality into just lustful physicality. This ultimately leads to the demonization and censorship of the feminine body.”
